What is a Lifestyle disease: According to MedicineNet, lifestyle disease is defined as a disease associated with the way a person or group of people lives. Lifestyle diseases include atherosclerosis, heart disease, and stroke; obesity and type 2 diabetes; and diseases associated with smoking and alcohol and drug abuse. Regular physical activity helps prevent obesity, heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, colon cancer, and premature mortality.

According to WHO, Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), including heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, and chronic lung disease, are collectively responsible for almost 70% of all deaths worldwide. The rise of NCDs has been driven by primarily four major risk factors: tobacco use, physical inactivity, the harmful use of alcohol, and unhealthy diets. The epidemic of NCDs poses devastating health consequences for individuals, families, and communities, and threatens to overwhelm health systems. The socioeconomic costs associated with NCDs make the prevention and control of these diseases a major development imperative for the 21st century.

As one can see, lifestyle diseases are already the leading cause of premature deaths around the world and their share is only increasing as more and more people get out of poverty. It is a shame that as the wealth of a nation goes up, mental and psychological issues go up rather than going down.

These lifestyle diseases by very definition can be controlled by changes in, well lifestyle. So what does that really translate into practical terms? We will explore that and much more in a series of lectures with Dr. Parthasarathy over the coming days.

Ayurveda offers basic principles and guidelines to live life in harmony with nature. Dr. Parthasaraty in particular prides in teaching and unfolding these basic principles to his disciples instead of just giving readymade answers which are specific to a certain context and don’t work when that context changes. A very simple yet provocative example of that would be ‘avoid eating meat’. Many would be surprised to know that not only Ayurveda doesn’t prohibit meat-eating, it actually prescribes guidelines on when and how to eat meat!

The first course in the series is starting on Sunday, 11th October 2020 at 10:30 AM EDT. The course will focus on basic concepts related to body constitution according to Ayurveda and how should one decide what and when to eat to be in alignment with the environment. The course will be taught in 16 lectures of 1.5 hours each via online video conference. All reading material and recording of the sessions will be made available through the learning management system of
